Short Fiction

As well as being a prolific novelist and scriptwriter, Rosemary Timperley is also remembered for her many short stories. She had a penchant for writing ghost fiction, a literary field in which she excelled. Many of her stories are tales about hauntings of one type or another. More often than not her protagonists are either children or women who "see" ghostly apparitions that are invisible to everyone else. Some of the finest stories she wrote in this vein are "Stella" (1979), "From Another World" (1976), "The Mistress in Black" (1969) and "On the Theatre Steps" (1979). Timperley also penned some excellent horror stories, an example of which is the dark and terrifying "Hell on Both Sides of the Gate" (1962). It is important to note that Timperley wrote short fiction across several other genres. Early tales such as "Husbands in Hardware" (1954) and "Noises in the Night" (1954) are fine examples of humorous light fiction, whereas later stories, including "Scarbo" (1976) and "Mr. Nobody" (1975) are pure science fiction. "The Agent" (1977) is a neat little espionage story, "The Long Walk Home" (1964) is a love story and "Mandragora" (1985) is a bizarre fantasy tale. Many more of Timperley's short stories are hard to classify; the evocative "An Old Lady Sings the Blues" (1976) being a case in point. Much of her short fiction can quite reasonably be considered mainstream; this is particularly true of the majority of the stories Timperley contributed to the Evening News, a London newspaper that regularly published fiction. It is obvious from reading her stories that Timperley drew inspiration from her experience as a school teacher, as many of them take place in a school setting, or involve the relationship between a parent and child. Timperley wrote with compassion and despite the "off-beat" nature of many of her tales, it could be said that her best short stories are essentially about people and the emotions that drive them.
